Chrysanthemum
The chrysanthemum is used as an emblem for the imperial family, ever since the Emperor Go-Toba from the Kamakura period. In the 4th year of Meiji period, all non-royal use of the emblem was outlawed.
Japanese ivy
This emblem is a pictorial representation of the Japaese ivy. The Japanese ivy was popular during the Edo period, and was used as an emblem by many commoners. The eighth Tokugawa Shogun also used this as his emblem.
