Cloves are originally from the Maluku Islands. They also have a long history in Japan, and are even contained in the Shosoin treasure house. The emblem represents the bud.
Scales
Scales refer to those from a fish, but also refer to a similarly shaped pattern. The emblem has been used by the Kamkura Hojo family, and by the late Hojo family as well.
